Sustainability 'makes business sense'
13 May 2008
While many may see it as an ethical decision, there is good business sense behind adopting sustainable practices, it has been suggested.
Clare Davidson, business reporter for BBC News, notes that each pound spent on powering data centres incurs two to three times the cost in cooling appliances to a workable temperature.
But she reports the opinion of industry insiders that working to minimise energy consumption need not be viewed purely as an ethical choice.
Michael Fahy, managing director of infrastructure services at investment bank Lehman Brothers, tells the broadcaster: "Being sustainable is not altruistic - given rising costs of energy, it just makes business sense."
He adds that, far from being distinct considerations, sustainability and efficiency gains "dovetail" together to represent a single overall topic to be taken into mind by IT professionals.
Industry action group The Green Grid asserts that power consumption in data centres may be reduced by minimising the energy supplied to idle servers and removing legacy systems which are no longer practical to maintain.
