Data centres 'affected by energy costs'
14 May 2008
Energy costs are now having a negative impact on data centres, it has been claimed.
Industry news source TMCnet reports "spiralling costs" for both cooling systems and power supplied to data centres.
According to the news provider, research by IDC has identified a cost saving of up to 50 per cent to be made by adopting an eco-friendly approach to power consumption.
TMCnet reports Stephen Garrison, vice-president of marketing for Force10 Networks, as having said: "The climate is ripe for business and IT communities to re-examine their power consumption."
But he warns that overuse of the phrase "green IT" has led to the waters becoming muddied with a consequential impact on businesses looking to improve their efficiency.
The article adds that the negative effects of high power and cooling costs are not confined to budgetary impacts but are also materialising in terms of customer service statistics.
Force10 Networks recently revealed that its switches and routers have been deployed by Bahraini data centre hosting provider Next Generation Network Solutions to help meet its customers' expectations.
