Most firms 'have green data centre strategies'
15 May 2008
The majority of large European companies have a specific strategy in place to increase the eco-friendliness of their data centres, it has been revealed.
Research conducted by the Digital Realty Trust finds that 60 per cent of businesses with more than 5,000 employees are looking to make their data centres greener by following a particular plan.
Of these, three-quarters have established an initiative covering the data centre as a whole and the individual devices installed within it.
The analyst claims that such strategies have frequently been developed as an evolutionary process as the concept of green IT becomes more formalised over time.
"Although much media attention has been focused on green data centres over the past year, the constructs that define the green movement remain undefined," the Digital Realty Trust asserts.
In corresponding research addressing the US market, the organisation reports that fewer companies have a formal strategy, accounting for 51 per cent of all large firms.
However, those with a scheme in place to make their data centres greener are more likely to adopt a holistic approach, with 81 per cent examining both the facility as a whole and appliances at the server level.
