Alacritech network accelerators chosen by university

15 May 2008

Coppin State University in Baltimore, Maryland, has selected Alacritech's network accelerator cards in order to enhance its data network, it has been revealed.

The educational facility has offloaded TCP processing from the 30 servers on its network, consequently achieving a 25 per cent increase in throughput by allowing the servers to concentrate on running applications and serving data.

Meanwhile, the ease with which the cards may be installed is recognised by the university, with a spokesperson stating that implementing the network accelerators takes minutes, compared with hours for Fibre Channel or iSCSI counterparts.

Thomas R Smith III, director of network services at Coppin State University, says: "The greatest benefit has been IT efficiency - we now spend 100 hours less a month managing our infrastructure."

Alacritech recently suggested that TCP offloading is of growing importance as 10 Gb Ethernet becomes more widely used, due to the fact that servers would require an additional 10 GHz of processing power to handle the greater data loads.
