Power disruptions are silent killers, says Eaton
16 May 2008
Minor disturbances in power supplies are the data centre equivalent of hypertension, according to Eaton.
The uninterruptible power supplies vendor asserts that apparently short-term or undetectable interruptions to energy can be "silent killers" to data storage systems.
"Invisible and fleeting power disturbances can be silent killers - the electronic equivalent of high blood pressure," Eaton asserts.
However, the company adds that advancements in power management technology now allow for many minor events to be detected and addressed before they are able to impact on the data centre.
"Capabilities that formerly required expensive, specialised equipment and consultants can now be packaged into compact, affordable devices," Eaton observes.
Eaton's own Power Xpert meters aim to "demystify" power quality by detecting the status of the network and converting data into a more accessible graphical format.
The company recently launched a new web portal entitled "big power, small footprint" to highlight the potential of three-stage uninterruptible power supplies to reduce the physical space required in data centres by the energy supply system.
