WAN optimisation 'crosses the disciplines'

19/05/2008 12:07:11

Businesses implementing wide-area network (WAN) optimisation could find there is some doubt as to who is "on the hook" for the project, it has been claimed.

Dan Campbell writes in Network World of the different disciplines required of those administrating such an initiative.

He explains that network engineers are typically more skilled at working with routers and switches so, on the surface, may appear to be more suited to undertaking WAN optimisation.

But he adds that many appliances involved in the process also operate in a similar way to a proxy - meaning IT staff may be more experienced in implementing those features.

"Network engineers tend to know something about operating systems ... and IT engineers usually know some networking," Mr Campbell asserts.

"But the level of knowledge one has of the other is usually limited to just what is needed."

Wide-area data services vendor Riverbed Technology offers training for those looking to implement WAN optimisation which it advises is suitable for anyone with "at least some basic networking knowledge"..
