Storwize STN-6000 series 'revolutionises storage economics'

28 May 2008

The new STN-6000 series of data compression devices from Storwize "revolutionises storage economics", according to the firm.

A white paper discussing the technology explains that compressing primary storage is an effective means of both reducing the amount of disk space needed and meeting the objectives of any green policy a company may have in place.

With its STN-6000 series, Storwize claims that benefits can begin to be derived within 30 minutes and, as the devices operate transparently, no changes to the existing network are required.

This can consequently reduce the physical space needed within the data centre, as well as expenditure on power and cooling, by up to 95 per cent, the firm adds.

Meanwhile, further advantages to be gained include a reduction of network traffic and accelerated archiving due to the lower quantities of information which need to be stored.

The series features models for all sizes of business, ranging from the entry-level STN-6300p with 8 GB of memory and eight Ethernet ports to the high-end STN-6800p with 12 ports and 32 GB of on-board memory.

Gal Naor, chief executive officer of Storwize, commented on the launch of the range: "Storwize now offers end-to-end solutions to all market segments from entry-level to high-performance computing data centre environments, yielding dramatic data footprint reductions."
