WAN optimisation 'a billion-dollar sector'

10 Jun 2008

Wide area network (WAN) optimisation is to surpass $1 billion (£516 million) in value over the course of 2008, Infonetics Research anticipates.

The organisation has predicted revenues reaching into ten figures for the sector over the year, following strong first quarter figures - despite noting that some vendors are less positive.

Matthias Machowinski, directing analyst for enterprise voice and data at Infonetics Research, says: "Quarterly revenue is up significantly from this time last year and, while vendors sounded a little downbeat after Q1, we still think this market will pass $1 billion in revenue this year."

Figures compiled by the analyst indicate that revenues over the first three months of 2008 were up by 58 per cent on the same period of 2007.

Although the reporting period was down slightly on the quarter immediately before it, Infonetics Research notes that a similar effect was observed in 2007.

In a previous study, the company found that the WAN optimisation market as a whole grew in value by 71 per cent between 2006 and 2007, to total more than $800 million over the calendar year.
