Deduplication 'can be a game changer'
02 Jul 2008
Deduplication "certainly can be" a game-changing solution for IT infrastructure, according to a new white paper from Spectra Logic.
The organisation notes that there is "industry excitement" surrounding data deduplication, with average headline reduction ratios of between ten and 20 times in storage requirements quoted by vendors.
Spectra Logic comments: "This may sound too good to be true, but it is possible when used with data sets that include a lot of duplicated data that must be backed up."
While the company suggests that the potential ways in which to implement deduplication are many and varied, it contends that the reduction in storage requirements is the primary advantage of such technology.
The firm's own nTier Deduplication range of tiered disk storage systems is identified as one means in which such benefits may be realised by businesses.
Spectra Logic nTier Deduplication devices provide from 5 TB to 900 TB of capacity and, thanks to their 20:1 average deduplication ratio, may be able to hold the equivalent of more than 1 PB of data, the company suggests.
