Data risk 'often an afterthought'
09 Jul 2008
Many companies are leaving themselves at risk by not incorporating concerns regarding data leakage into their outsourcing projects.
Such is the warning which comes from the Information Security Forum (ISF), a non-profit organisation with around 300 members worldwide.
In a new report written by Simone Seth, the industry body notes that poor network security may result in data being lost, as well as presenting vulnerability to hackers.
This in turn may cause breaches in confidentiality or inadvertent fraud to take place, the ISF contends.
Ms Seth comments: "If the necessary controls are not budgeted or put in place to mitigate the risks, it can have serious consequences."
The ISF previously noted that attacks on open ports may be more likely as company networks increasingly attempt to cater for remote access by workers and clients alike.
Permitting remote access is blurring the boundaries between data networks and the outside world, the organisation explains..
