'Revenues growing' for 10 GbE
14 Jul 2008
The uptake of high-speed ten-gigabit Ethernet (10 GbE) is helping to drive revenues upwards for many vendors, it has been revealed.
Industry analyst IDC suggests that it is still too soon to determine who will lead the 10 GbE market in the long term, but notes that smaller start-up vendors are proving competitive at present.
Aileen Arcilla, senior analyst for semiconductors, says: "What is interesting to note is the number of start-ups that are currently playing in this space, with some actually surpassing sales of 10 GbE chips compared with established companies."
The analyst reports "notable" revenues derived from the technology across the sector in 2007, in addition to continued strong performance from other high-speed networking protocols such as gigabit Ethernet.
Earlier this year, Keith Parker, director of product marketing at Alacritech, wrote in Enterprise Networks & Servers of the potential importance of virtualisation for the future of 10 GbE.
He explained that a virtualised data centre model could help to provide the 20 GHz of processing power required to sustain a full duplex 10 GbE connection..
