Storwize 'cuts Mazda data volume by two-thirds'

01 Aug 2008

Motor vehicle manufacturer Mazda has succeeded in reducing the volume of its data backups by two-thirds after installing Storwize compression devices, it has emerged.

Following the implementation of the firm's STN-6500 appliance, Mazda has been able to store 27 TB of data on each of its three servers, providing 81 TB of capacity overall.

The device was first deployed in December 2007 and, by June 2008, had reduced the initial 10 TB volume under its management to one-third of its original size, freeing up 6.5 TB of disk space.

Storwize explains that Mazda's storage needs are driven by the use of computers and three-dimensional imaging as part of an end-to-end design process which incorporates maintaining digital impressions of each individual part of its vehicle models.

Industry publication CRN recently identified Storwize as an emerging technology vendor, the third year in which the firm has made the shortlist of innovative operators.
