CNP 'stealth-tests' Riverbed appliances

01 Aug 2008

Riverbed Technology's Steelhead range of wide-area data services (WDS) appliances were deployed in secret by construction technology company CNP, it has emerged.

The organisation opted to conduct "user acceptance" tests by installing the appliances without telling its employees and waiting to see if they would experience any problems.

Head of IT at CNP Richard Seear comments: "We ran several users on the new system and didn't tell them that we'd changed servers, just to see whether the phone would ring - it didn't."

But CNP was able to facilitate more efficient replication of files without the need for expenditure on increasing amounts of network bandwidth, Riverbed Technology reveals.

Mr Seear adds that the need for a WDS solution became apparent as an alternative to installing new large servers at each of the company's data handling facilities.

Riverbed Technology was recently identified as leading the WDS market by industry analyst Gartner in its assessment of the wide area network optimisation controller sector.
