Deduplication of primary storage 'is increasing'
15 Aug 2008
The implementation of deduplication technology is portraying a shift away from backups and archiving towards primary network storage, according to ComputerWorld.
Writing for the publication, Jim Damoulakis argues that the technology may be implemented on any system - whether primary or secondary storage - providing that there is some commonality between the files which must be stored.
"Until recently, one aspect of deduplication that was generally unquestioned was its focus - secondary data, particularly backup - however, there are growing signs that this too is changing," Mr Damoulakis asserts.
He notes that there are a number of options to take into account, such as whether to deduplicate at the source or the target, as an inline process or during archiving.
Deduplication provider Spectra Logic recently claimed that networks which implement the technology are "much more efficient" than those which require a full backup of data to be performed each night..
