Firms 'overlook long-term storage'
19 Aug 2008
Many companies are short-sighted when it comes to establishing storage solutions that can cope over extended periods of time, it has been claimed.
Freeform Dynamics commentator Tony Lock explains that some companies wait until their storage system can no longer cope before moving data to a more long-term medium.
"However, as the volume of information and data being generated soars and the costs of storing it escalate dramatically it is clear that something has to be done," he adds.
Mr Lock contends that companies typically prioritise the immediate handling of data when establishing IT infrastructure and procedures, but do not always consider the long-term storage of files.
But he notes that implementing an effective and well-managed storage system can have associated benefits for firms with regulatory requirements which demand that they are able to retrieve data on request.
Mr Lock recently asserted that developments such as virtualisation are helping to make resilient IT services more affordable for many companies..
