Energy Star ratings 'may omit key features'
19 Aug 2008
The introduction of Energy Star ratings for server equipment may not prove a conclusive way to compare products from different vendors, it has been observed.
Hu Yoshida, chief technical officer at Hitachi Data Systems, explains that some key features of different devices are likely to be excluded from the assessment criteria.
These include virtualisation, as confirmed in a letter from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), but Mr Yoshida contends that the omissions could stretch to incorporate deduplication and tiered storage.
According to the EPA, the decision was made due to a desire to establish energy performance standards which apply to technology itself and not to additional features which are not available on all systems.
Mr Yoshida comments: "A product with a better Energy Star rating may actually provide less energy savings than a product that has a lower rating but can provide more efficient use of storage."
Among the proposals made by the EPA is the suggestion that utilities providers should offer a preferential tariff to business clients who implement energy efficiency improvements in their data centres.
