Effective data archiving 'aids compliance'

22 Aug 2008

Ensuring that data is archived efficiently can help to meet regulatory requirements, it has been suggested.

IT Backbones reports the findings of Forrester, which recently discovered that the pace of information growth is placing a variety of pressures on many data centre managers.

Principal analyst Noel Yuhanna says: "An archival system becomes critical when you need to access archived information in response to a legal summons, customer service issue, security investigation or technical issue."

He adds that the value derived from implementing an archiving solution may be seen as growing in line with the additional ease it lends to the data retrieval process.

With Forrester reporting that a fifth of all expenditure on data centre infrastructure now being directed at maintaining pace with information growth, the need for efficient retrieval preparations may be greater than ever.

However, TheInfoPro recently suggested that the heat generated by high-density storage environments has some companies looking to alternative means of increasing the information-handling abilities of their data centres..
