Disk storage market 'shows resilience'

27 Aug 2008

The hard disk drive (HDD) market has shown resilience in the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region in recent months, according to IDC.

Figures from the analyst suggest that an increasing appetite for storage capacity across the sector helped it to record growth of 19 per cent during the second quarter of 2008.

Claus Egge, programme director for IDC's EMEA HDD research, says: "The growth of external HDD drives and specialist automotive applications as well as the almost insatiable demand for higher storage capacities in all customer segments have been the foundation of strong 2008 growth."

Among the driving forces behind shipments, IDC lists the internal and external PC market and the inclusion of disks in enterprise-level storage arrays.

The latter channel experienced growth above that of the sector on average, with sales up by 22.5 per cent year-on-year.

Previous research by IDC revealed that firms' interest in new technology is currently being subdued by concerns relating to the economy and business conditions..
