'Remarkable second quarter' for external disk sales

09 Sep 2008

The second quarter of 2008 proved to be "remarkable" for the external disk storage sector, according to new figures from market analyst IDC.

Research manager for storage systems Natalya Yezhkova explains: "The second quarter of the year was remarkable not only because it is the highest growth in two years, but also because of the distribution of this growth across different market segments."

Year-on-year, quarterly revenues secured by providers of external disk storage were up by 10.9 per cent, with factory sales up by an even greater 16.7 per cent over the same period.

Networked disk storage outpaced both of these statistics, as IDC recorded growth in network-attached storage and storage area networking devices of 22 per cent year-on-year.

IDC previously reported that interest in scalable servers among network administrators helped to drive growth in the market across Europe, the Middle East and Africa during the second quarter of 2008..
