Cost 'not the only gain' from thin provisioning
09 Sep 2008
The advantages of thin provisioning do not end with the potential financial benefits to be gained from implementing such technology, according to Hu Yoshida.
Other gains stand to be made by companies which use thin provisioning - part of Hitachi Data Systems' virtualisation offering - the company's chief technical officer asserts.
He explains that these can continue to be of benefit even if companies are charged in terms of the overall network capacity used - which may remain the same under thin provisioning.
Despite the unchanged overall usage, Mr Yoshida proposes that smaller volumes would need to be replicated and transmitted over the network, helping to improve efficiency.
The chief technical officer contends that efficiency gains may in fact be considered worth paying more for by many IT administrators.
Mr Yoshida formerly claimed that the benefits of implementing virtualisation include increased utilisation of network capacity and non-disruptive migration of data.
