Data centres 'an immediate green IT concern'
11 Sep 2008
Data centres are among the immediate areas of concern for IT administrators looking to adopt greener working practices, Gartner has claimed.
The market analyst claims that many operators are becoming confused about the issues relating to green IT - and has sorted them into immediate, mid-term and long-term concerns to help clarify the situation.
Many of the most pressing matters relate to data centres - including power, cooling and floor space, all of which Gartner identifies as being relevant to address within the next two years.
Rakesh Kumar, research vice-president at Gartner, comments: "With so much hype, users are left with a sense of confusion about where and when they should invest their time and money."
But adopting advanced technologies for cooling and consolidating server usage through virtualisation are both suggested as immediate ways in which IT systems may be made greener.
Gartner also recently revealed that, during the second quarter of 2008, the external controller-based storage market increased in size by almost a fifth over the same three months of the previous year..
