Backward-compatible HBAs 'are easier'

16 Sep 2008

Emulex asserts that its new range of 8 Gbps host bus adapters (HBAs) may be easier to install thanks to their backwards compatibility with slower devices.

The HBAs come equipped with virtualisation technology, allowing individual connections to be established for virtual servers with the need to access their own specified storage pool on the network.

Vice-president of product marketing Scott McIntyre comments on the ease with which customers may find the devices interoperate with their existing 2 Gbps or 4 Gbps infrastructure.

"Customers can leverage their existing drivers and management tools to accelerate their infrastructure deployments and more easily and rapidly evolve to next-generation data centre technology," he states.

The company claims that the devices have been introduced in order to meet the bandwidth demands of virtualised data centres operating using blade servers.

Last month, Emulex demonstrated the 8 Gbps HBAs as part of an "industry-leading" data centre set-up at the Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco.
