Moto chooses ExaGrid for system backup

17 Sep 2008

Motorway service provider Moto has installed a two-site ExaGrid disk-based backup system after its network performance was threatened, it has been revealed.

Before the system was installed, Moto's IT department spent up to ten hours performing nightly backups of data and had issues with tape reliability, the firm states.

"With tape, we constantly had to double and triple-check everything, but with ExaGrid, we no longer have to worry about our backups," systems architect at Moto Simon Austin says.

The firm's disaster recovery plan is more comprehensive and the GRID architecture provides easy scalability, Mr Austin adds.

Data de-duplication and last backup compression are other features of the ExaGrid system, which if installed at a second site lowers costs because the technology used requires minimal wide area network bandwidth.

The system works with other backup applications and Moto says it chose to install ExaGrid to run alongside its existing software CA ARCserve Backup.

Moto's IT department now runs incrementals during the week and full backups only at weekends because it is comfortable with ExaGrid's reliability, Mr Austin adds.

In related news, PA Computing had a Home Office contract axed after losing a memory stick containing data of 84,000 prisoners.
