HSBC data centre given excellence rating
17 Sep 2008
The UK's first green excellence rating has been awarded to HSBC for its north London data centre, the bank says.
It will be the first of three new HSBC data centres when it is completed in the first half of 2009, all of which are designed with sustainability principles, it claims.
"Our commitment to being green is a pride shared by our colleagues and suppliers. We have found significant support within the industry to providing next generation equipment and designs with conservation in mind," says group chief information officer at the bank Ken Harvey.
HSBC has committed over $40 million (£22.4 million) to improve the energy-efficiency of its worldwide offices and all new data centres will be designed according to accredited standards such as the BRE Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM), it states.
The bank has minimised its environmental impact and recognised that data centres use vast amounts of energy, Francis Sullivan, advisor on the environment at HSBC says.
BREEAM assessments were created in 1990 with the first two versions covering offices and homes, according to its website..
