Rail delivery 'supports green IT' for FSC
22 Sep 2008
Fujitsu Siemens Computers (FSC) has announced plans to adopt rail as a delivery method in order to maintain its commitment to the environment.
The organisation asserts that rail delivery poses a number of benefits to green IT initiatives compared with alternatives such as air travel and ocean shipping.
As a result of this fact, FSC states that it is now sending equipment from China via a 17-day rail journey to Germany which passes through six different countries and seven time zones.
Heribert Goeggerle, senior vice-president of supply operations at FSC, says: "The clear environmental benefit is that we are able to demonstrate that taking the green option is not an overhead or an additional cost, but in many respects the best choice."
Mr Goeggerle adds that rail transport costs around a quarter as much as air travel, while providing delivery in one-third the time taken by ocean.
FSC recently announced the availability of the RX600 S4 industry-standard server, which it claims is the most powerful Primergy server yet produced.
