Businesses 'to further consolidate IT with Riverbed'

23 Sep 2008

Riverbed has announced an OEM agreement to embed VMware software as the preferred virtualisation platform within Steelhead appliances.

Under this new project, companies can improve manageability by running up to five remote office virtual edge services without the need for separate dedicated servers, meaning the operational efficiency and agility of a business can increase, Riverbed claims.

IT costs can also be controlled while further consolidating the infrastructure.

"Working together, wide area network (WAN) optimisation and virtualisation technologies allow organisations to move forward with efforts to lower operational and capital costs through IT consolidation, while also ensuring that end-users have access to essential applications and services," says research vice-president for Gartner Joe Skorupa.

Centralising servers, along with consolidating IT systems, is a trend that firms continue to follow, he adds.

The virtual appliances can be deployed by customers directly on Steelhead products which will help to reduce the hardware infrastructure footprint at the office, Riverbed states.

A WAN computer network uses routers and public communications links to cover a broad area, which may cross national, regional or metropolitan boundaries.
