Riverbed to 'lift burden off storage servers'

23 Sep 2008

Acceleration technology that was used by Riverbed to reduce network traffic is now set to help storage servers, with a new box named Atlas.

The device detects segments in the data the first time it goes through Atlas and these are tagged with a reference number, which, along with the segment, is saved in the storage system, according to online technology site www.networkworld.com.

Files can be found and retrieved by the system - using fewer storage system resources - while every write and read goes through the Atlas because it can reconstruct the file from the stored segments and their tags.

Costs of future storage growth can be reduced by 30 to 90 per cent and installing the device may forestall storage upgrades, the site claims, adding that the new Atlas box by Riverbed could challenge storage makers such as EMC, which after "enviable sales growth for more than a decade may soon find growth slowing for an unexpected reason".

Dictionary compression, or de-duplication, permanently reduces the amount of storage space used.

Businesses are turning to wide-area data services to accelerate business operations while controlling IT costs, according to Riverbed's website.
