Outsourcing 'will increase for green IT'
24 Sep 2008
Green IT has been pushed to the top of the agenda after the government promised its technology operations will be carbon neutral by 2013, an outsourcing organisation says.
New government environment regulations and corporate responsibility has pushed being green to the top of the agenda in the boardroom and in the outsourcing industry, the National Outsourcing Association's chair Martyn Hart writes on silicon.com, a business technology website.
"Outsourcing your data centre may be more cost effective because suppliers have access to more efficient data centre technology and can access economies of scale, for instance," Mr Hart says.
Technology outsourcing is expected to rise because organisations will have to financially cope with environmental compliance, he adds.
Cheaper options may not necessarily be the best because these IT systems may require more maintenance and therefore have a greater impact upon the environment.
At the moment however, green credentials are a bonus rather than a deal-breaker, Mr Hart believes.
Michael Dell, Dell's founder, chairman and chief executive officer, recently told journalists in London that interest in green IT is growing fast, theregister.co.uk reports..
