Green IT 'moving from data centres'
28 Oct 2008
The supermarket industry has been a surprise benefactor in the advantages of virtualisation, driving down the maintenance and energy costs in the grocery sector, it has been claimed.
Deploying green technology has led to Costco, the Associated Grocers of Baton Rouge and C&K Market to limit the use of energy-intensive servers, while virtual machines have come to be favoured over psychical servers, Supermarket News writes.
Such progression into other industries is a sign that energy-efficient IT is moving away from the remit of data centres and from the radar of chief information officers, while being viewed as an effective strategy by others, Green Computing reports.
"The technologies most often associated with green IT - including the technologies mentioned above at work in supermarkets - focus on bringing down energy use and lowering emissions from within," the technology forum notes.
Meanwhile, Finextra has announced that HSBC is hoping to reduce the energy consumption of its retail units by a fifth, although the bank claims to have been carbon neutral since 2005..
