QLogic Infiniband 'boosts storm system'
28 Nov 2008
Network infrastructure solutions vendor QLogic has announced that its InfiniBand adapters and switches have been deployed by the University of Oklahoma as part of Sooner, its newest Linux cluster.
Researchers at the university will use Sooner in the hope of improving early storm warning systems and saving lives by studying and modelling tornadoes.
Indeed, 534 computer nodes are connected through QLogic's 7200 Series double data rate (DDR) adapters in a 2:1 network topology, while the core switch of this is the vendor's SilverStorm 9240 288 port DDR switch.
This connects to 37 SilverStorm 9024 24 Port DDR InfiniBand switches across 28 racks, the vendor states.
Commenting on the news, Frank Berry, vice-president of marketing at QLogic, says: "The optimised, high-bandwidth, low-latency provided by QLogic end-to-end InfiniBand networking solutions means that more modelling can be achieved by institutions in a shorter period of time, ultimately moving researchers to faster results."
In related news, QLogic recently stated that it was going to develop 40 gigabits per second quad data rate InfiniBand solutions.
