ExaGrid offers 'clear savings'

26 Feb 2009

Clear savings can be derived with ExaGrid's deduplication solutions, according to one company representative.

Marc Crespi, vice-president of product management, makes the assertion in a post on the company's blog, ExaGrid's Eye on Deduplication.

He explains that deduplication can be a significant factor in differentiating between the operating costs of tape-based backup and disk-based alternatives capable of utilising the technology.

Mr Crespi adds that it is this change in operating cost - rather than the total cost of ownership - that helps to make disk-based backup with deduplication a desirable option in difficult economic times.

Bill Andrews, ExaGrid's chief executive officer, previously wrote for the blog of the limitations on how fast disk-based backup can be expected to perform.

He explained that it is frequently not the physical speed limitations of the disks themselves that places the upper limit, but bottlenecks experienced elsewhere in the storage environment which may be resolved.
