Effective tools 'turn data into information'
03 Mar 2009
The distinction between data and information can be determined by the effectiveness of the tools used in its retrieval and analysis, it has been noted.
Healthcare industry chief information officer Dr John Halamka writes for BusinessWeek of the growing data management burden faced by providers in his sector.
But, with effective tools in place, he adds that it is possible to "translate data from events such as changes in medication, patient visits for diagnostic testing, lab results or newly discovered allergic reactions into actionable wisdom".
This could be particularly important as he notes his own medical history now amounts to 77 pages of unstructured data - despite him being "relatively healthy".
Dr Halamka urges healthcare leaders to put in place tools which can take such unstructured data and transform it instantly into information and ultimately into electronic wisdom to be used by physicians in their treatment of a patient.
Rachael King recently wrote for the publication of the importance for commercial organisations of adopting tools capable of deriving a profit from information held about customers in order to maximise their earnings during the economic downturn..
