Cloud computing 'a change for the better'
03 Mar 2009
While not all new technologies represent an improvement on their predecessors, TechNewsWorld argues that cloud computing is a change for the better.
Doug Harr, chief information officer for database company Ingres, writes for the publication that cloud computing in a virtualised network environment can help to make sure all equipment is being used to the fullest extent of its capacity.
"One can argue we are being 'green' with the most efficient use of power and utilities possible," he notes.
He adds that the scalability of cloud computing is another benefit, allowing new storage to be incorporated into the network within minutes, as well as enabling existing storage allocations to be contracted where appropriate.
"I now have a new place to turn to provision and enable additional compute power and storage on a pay-as-you-go model," he asserts.
Gartner recently predicted that the years until 2011 represent an opportunity for "trailblazers" to emerge in the uptake of cloud computing, before the segment settles into its long-term structure for the future..
