Virtual Iron 'allows minimum usage setting'
03 Mar 2009
Virtual Iron's minimum power usage setting can help businesses to add to the physical infrastructure consolidation achieved through virtualisation by reducing energy consumption as well.
Such is the observation of GigaOM, which lists Virtual Iron's LivePower feature as one of four tools capable of driving cost savings in the data centre by raising efficiency.
LivePower requires the user to put in place specific usage limits denoting how much of a server's physical capacity should be utilised by virtual machines at any one time.
If the server is being used below this level, it is shut down and the virtual machines moved elsewhere - saving the electricity which would otherwise be needed to run the server.
Should demand rise again, it can automatically boot up and resume its place on the network, under the feature of Virtual Iron v4.4 and beyond.
Enterprise users may be more interested in the recently released Virtual Iron Extended Enterprise Edition Release 4.5 which was announced for distribution in early February.
