JDSU unveils tuneable optical transceiver
30 Mar 2009
JDSU has announced the launch of an optical transceiver which it claims is the first monolithically integrated and tuneable device of its kind.
The 10 Gbps Small Form Factor Pluggable or 'XFP' transceiver is as much as 85 per cent smaller than previous alternatives, which the manufacturer notes means that more could be implemented in an office of the same size.
Alan Lowe, president of the communications and commercial optical products business segment at JDSU, says: "Many of our top customers are already designing the JDSU tuneable XFP transceiver into their next-generation systems."
He adds that JDSU is working with nine organisations to help develop 12 different designs - and that the feedback so far has proved to be positive.
In addition to its physical footprint, the transceiver's carbon footprint may also be reduced as the manufacturer claims it can lower power dissipation by 60 per cent.
JDSU also recently announced plans to exhibit its optical transceivers at the Optical Fiber Communication Conference/National Fiber Optics Engineers Conference, which was held in San Diego last week.
