UK authorities 'achieve virtualisation benefits'

02 Jun 2009

A number of UK local authorities have achieved benefits from implementing virtualisation, reports eWeek Europe.

Bracknell Forest Borough Council is one of these, having consolidated the number of servers in its data centre by implementing virtualisation - and achieving a corresponding drop in power usage.

Whereas its data centre was previously consuming around half of its total power used, the council tells eWeek Europe that the facility's consumption dropped by 40 kVA after virtualisation.

Meanwhile, the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead has also reduced its number of servers as many of the physical machines it had in place were nearing the end of their lifecycle.

The authority reports a drop in power consumption of 44 per cent - which eWeek Europe suggests is an indication that virtualisation technology has succeeded in achieving its aims.

Among its ICT services, the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead allows library users to access computers for free for up to 45 minutes per day in order to apply for jobs, create a CV or simply browse the internet..
