Hitachi 'the choice of presidents'

09/06/2009 17:30:34

Demand for the Hitachi Content Archive Platform could be high from the White House during Barack Obama's presidency.

Writing in a blog post, Hitachi Data Systems' chief technical officer Hu Yoshida explains that George W Bush left an archive of 100 terabytes when he left the Oval Office - which is maintained on a Hitachi Content Archive Platform.

But President Obama's data storage requirements could far outstrip this, as Mr Yoshida forecasts "tens of petabytes" will need to be stored once his presidency is over.

He adds that the Hitachi Content Archive Platform is currently the only product available with the scalability capable of achieving this order of magnitude.

Among the new data demands faced by the Obama administration are the use of Blackberry smartphones and the presidential accounts on social networks including Twitter, Facebook and MySpace.

Mr Yoshida previously revealed that the Hitachi Universal Storage Platform VM is being deployed to store digitised patient records as part of efforts to reduce the cost of healthcare in the US by improving access to medical histories.
