IT plans 'must be made now'

09/06/2009 17:31:31

It is imperative that IT leaders plan now in order to respond when global economies recover, according to Gartner.

The analyst explains that there is typically a lag in terms of IT budgets, with finance for 2010 likely to be arranged between August 2009 and the end of the year.

However, Gartner fellow and vice-president Mark Raskino adds that there is a similar lag between the time when economies begin to recover and the moment when this recovery becomes "official" in terms of government figures.

As such, businesses are advised to create a plan for IT spending and growth which is reviewed on a monthly basis until such time as it is economically appropriate to put the budget into action.

"Companies simply can't wait for an 'official' declaration before they begin planning for better times," Mr Raskino comments.

Gartner - which is holding its IT Infrastructure, Operations & Management Summit 2009 at the Gaylord Palms Resort & Convention Center in Orlando later this month - lists virtualisation, real-time infrastructure architecture and modernisation as key elements of agility for businesses preparing for the future..
