Storage capacity shipments 'continue to grow'

09/06/2009 17:43:31

Figures from industry analyst IDC show that overall shipments of storage capacity continue to grow year-on-year.

During the first quarter of 2009, the IDC Worldwide Quarterly Disk Storage Systems Tracker recorded 14.8 per cent annual growth in the market in terms of capacity.

Overall, 2,146 petabytes were shipped over the three-month period - leading IDC to suggest that there are bright spots within the market in spite of the economic turbulence in global markets.

Liz Conner, research analyst for storage systems at IDC, says: "Storage products are still in demand, with customer spending trending towards more modular, price point options."

She adds that entry-level price bands for products up to $15,000 (£9,300) performed particularly well, recording 9.9 per cent growth year-on-year.

IDC previously predicted that total expenditure on disk storage systems will experience growth of 1.5 per cent in 2010 as markets rebound.

However, within this, capacity growth of up to 35 per cent is expected in 2009 as a whole and a predicted 44 per cent further capacity increase the following year..
