London 'a data centre hub', says Digital Britain report
22 Jun 2009
The UK government's Digital Britain report has singled out London as an important data centre hub within Europe and further afield.
Both in-house and third-party data centres are important, the report suggests, as companies either operate their own facilities or look to the security and "always-on" access that a professional third-party operator can offer.
The analysis suggests that the ever-changing nature of storage technology and telecommunications infrastructure means it is impossible to predict the most economical area in which to locate data centres in the long term.
However, it notes that the capital is currently the most popular location not only within the UK, but across the whole of Europe.
"London is the largest data centre market in Europe and a location for international businesses looking to expand into Europe," the Digital Britain report reads.
Commenting on the publication of the report, prime minister Gordon Brown suggested that completing the move to digital technologies in the coming years will carry "benefits across the board" for British businesses and consumers..
