Tesco reports 'strong case' for server virtualisation
23 Jun 2009
Supermarket chain Tesco's decision to implement virtualisation recently was driven by the strong business case the technology had to offer, it has been claimed.
Nigel Chubb, IT service manager at Tesco, tells Computer Business Review that the decision was seen as a "leap of faith" before it was made, but has proved pleasing in terms of what the company has achieved through the implementation.
He adds: "We are two-thirds of the way through and fully intend to continue with the programme - the business case for server virtualisation is a strong one."
Virtualisation was put in place across two of Tesco's data centres after its server assets were associated with 30 per cent of the facilities' power consumption, a figure which has dropped by two-thirds in the period since.
Tesco recently earned praise for its all-round approach to measuring and reducing carbon emissions, which has led to it being named as a recipient of the Carbon Trust Standard as the greenest supermarket chain in the UK..
