Potential value of data storage 'is enormous'
13 Nov 2009
Data is the major raw resource of today's economy and has massive potential value, according to Pete Gerr, Hitachi Data Systems' (HDS) strategic marketing principal. Data, once imbibed with context, meaning and purpose becomes information, he adds.
And while the basic concepts involved with storing data, or information, have not changed greatly over recent decades, the way it is accessed, how it is accessed and, crucially, from where it is accessed are constantly evolving.
The HDS expert wrote in his blog: "Everything in our lives [is] being digitised and this would cause a ripple effect through every industry from the point of creation of the digital assets, down to the very storage systems we preserve this information on."
In 2002, Mr Gerr predicted that there would be a move away from reliance on databases as unstructured data storage grew in importance. Seven years on and, he says, the explosion of such technology has surpassed even his own expectations and made the data storage industry especially important and lucrative.
Earlier this week Tony Asaro, founder and senior consultant at the INI Group, said that HDS' decision to evolve cloud-storage technology for public, instead of just private, use was a "logical next step".
