Best storage 'must vary per segment and type'

Businesses or individuals who require data storage technology should always opt for a system that is suited to providing the service they require, according to one expert. Michael Hay, chief strategist at Hitachi Data Systems (HDS), believes many firms lose efficiency by employing solutions that cannot cope with data output quickly and cost-effectively.
He also writes, in his HDS blog, that different situations require different technology - different architectures solve different domain issues. Which is why, Mr Hay asserts, market leaders such as HDS will always ensure their storage types vary depending on which sector they are to be utilised in.
Mr Hay, comparing the issue of evolution in data storage to the traditional hand saw versus the latest chainsaw, said: "The person who only has a hand saw at his disposal will only think that a hand saw can solve their problem and will never know a world where the speed and efficiency of using a chainsaw rule supreme."
Steve Murphy, HDS' vice-president in the UK and Ireland, said last week that the firm's cloud-based storage can save money in the right environment.
