HDS expert says data replicator is "simple, cost-effective recovery solution"

18 Nov 2009

Hitachi Data Systems (HDS) has announced the release of its new data replicator system, which one expert believes will offer "a simple, cost effective, disaster recovery solution."

Hu Yoshida, vice-president and chief technology officer at HDS, said that the software replication solution will be aimed at mid-range businesses where a heterogeneous storage system is in place. HDS' data replicator (HDR) will work by attaching a filter driver to each source of data and copying information, which is then sent to the solution's server asynchronously.

However, Mr Yoshida believes that data replicator technology could be used for other tasks. He said: "While HDR is primarily targeted for disaster recovery in the heterogeneous midrange storage market, it has the potential to do much more." Because of its ability to dial back and recover information from corrupted storage systems, it could eventually remove the need for point in time back-ups.

Upon unveiling the data replicator, HDS said that it would offer a unique recovery system that could be tailored to suit individual clients and could be adapted to be compatible with existing technology.
