Riverbed Steelheads 'remove need for costly bandwidth upgrade'
24 Nov 2009
Riverbed has announced that a leading operator of offshore drilling rigs and drillships has decided to implement its Steelheads. Stena Drilling will use the Steelhead appliances at various locations across the world, meaning the company does not have to pay out for an expensive bandwidth upgrade.
Had the company not deployed Riverbed Steelheads, it would have been forced to improve its 512 kilobytes per second connection to a one megabyte per second one. The expense involved would have doubled the company's current IT infrastructure outlay. Thanks to the introduction of the technology, Stena has also enjoyed a 30-fold improvement in file download times.
Ian Fraser, IT manager at Stena Drilling, said: "Riverbed is one of the few technologies we've found that has helped us to cut overall IT infrastructure costs while improving overall employee productivity. We're extremely pleased with the results."
Earlier this month Riverbed announced that its Steelheads improve application and data transfer in mobile locations. This, the company stated, increases productivity of workers based away from the office.
