Storage switch 'could save businesses money'
25 Nov 2009
Capacity utilisation and cost control are the major concerns of digital storage users who attended a recent Hitachi Data Systems (HDS) conference in New York. Many recalled personal experiences where switching from RAID 1 to RAID 5 had saved their business thousands of pounds, explains founder and consultant to the INI Group Tony Asaro, in his HDS blog.
But despite the clear benefits, some data storage system clients remain hesitant to make the switch something Mr Asaro puts down to unfounded fears of an impact on application performance. Hard disk drives are the slowest link of the storage chain, but the switch from RAID 1 to RAID 5 can result in them running at a faster rate. If, in large-scale systems, more than one disk is run in unison, the change in speed should be significant.
Mr Asaro writes: "We all want to save on cost and yet we aren't always willing to take the leap required to get there. And this is understandable since there may be some risk. And yet there is enough information out there for many of these technologies and solutions."
Last week HDS reported that its "less risky and costly" migration technology would help users move their data centre on to a more efficient and speedy system. Fellow blogger Christophe Bertrand claimed that the choice of technology is "vital" for businesses looking to switch data solutions.
