Closure of gap between modular and enterprise storage "is good for the customer"
30 Nov 2009
The gap between modular and enterprise storage products has closed significantly in recent years, one industry expert has claimed. Businesses selecting data storage technology in the past have been faced with a situation akin to "[choosing] between a golf cart and a BMW for transportation," according to Claus Mikkelsen, chief technology officer of storage architectures at Hitachi Data Systems (HDS).
Mr Mikkelsen, writing in his HDS blog, said: "That's no longer true for storage, which is good for the consumer and customer and many of the features historically available only on enterprise storage are now doing a 'reverse feature creep' to the midrange space."
Features and functions required, desired performance levels, scale-up versus scale-out capability and cost are the major concerns for those considering investing in data storage equipment, the HDS blogger noted. But with the gap in many of these categories closed and a wider range of products available, decisions are becoming easier to make.
Last week another HDS expert - Pete Gerr - claimed that IT firms seeking improved efficiency from their data systems, which could be more easily achieved thanks to a bigger choice of specialised products tailored to any business, would lead the country out of recession.
