HDS: Open standards may be the way forward
01 Dec 2009
The key to sharing data lies in how applications are tied into the hardware on which the information is stored, according to an expert. Mark Clark, director of e-health for Europe, Middle East and Africa, writing in his Hitachi Data Systems (HDS) blog, claims that open standards "may be the way forward".
This would allow storing attributes - for example, metadata and customer metadata - to loosen the constraints on data sharing that currently exist. These mechanisms give users the luxury of a more comprehensive search and retrieval ability when operating a data system, Mr Clark explains.
In the healthcare industry, the cost of replacing a server and migration complexities often prohibit such an event occurring too regularly. As such, efficiencies, cost savings and improved performance are rarely realised.
He says: "Open standards need to be adopted fully in the healthcare market with systems that facilitate sharing, common interfaces, file structures, search indexes and customisable metadata."
HDS last week claimed that IT departments across the country seeking improved efficiency - which, as a result, invest in solutions to achieve this - will lead Britain to recovery.
