Spectra Logic's tape storage 'still important in data backup'
02 Dec 2009
Tape storage is not dead, despite what disk vendors would have us believe, according to one industry expert. Jon Toigo, a former data system planner writing for SearchDisasterRecovery.com, suggests that the star of the recent Supercomputing 2009 conference in Oregon was Spectra Logic's T-Finity tape library, with the firm's booth attracting "heavy traffic" and standing-room only available at its presentations.
Some commentators have presented the view that tape storage will always be in demand due to its high reliability - and Mr Toigo believes Spectra Logic has the best product on the market, which has left their competitors "drooling". While he states that some small firms could abandon their tape systems due to the lack of staff hours available to run them, larger companies will stick by tape for the foreseeable future.
Mr Toigo writes: "T-Finity says a lot about where tape storage is today. Tape is geared towards larger enterprise environments seeking high-performance tape solutions not only for backup, but also for archiving. T-Finity contradicts some long-standing pundit observations about the death of tape."
Last month Spectra Logic claimed its T-Finity tape storage was "the best" in the business for larger organisations. It also believes the solution to be the most energy efficient of all similar products.
