HDP 'includes thin provisioning and creates great performance', says expert

Chief technical officer for storage architectures at Hitachi Data Systems ( Hitachi Data Systems) Claus Mikkelsen loves to see integration, he says.

In an Hitachi Data Systems blog post, Mr Mikkelsen explains that Hitachi Dynamic Provisioning (HDP) integrates "great performance improvement for random reads" with thin provisioning capabilities and "ease of provisioning".

These three advantages combine to make HDP one of his favourite products in the current Hitachi Data Systems portfolio of new technology, he adds.

Mr Mikkelsen notes the existence of extra features in HDP, such as zero-page reclaim, which can free up unused space in existing file structures when they are migrated to the new platform.

This typically creates between 30 and 40 per cent of extra capacity compared with competitors' solutions, he claims.

Mr Mikkelsen joined Hitachi Data Systems in 1998 and is now responsible for research into new technology in the areas of data lifecycle management, storage applications and virtualisation, as well as working with vendors and business partners on storage architecture development.
